I was asked to speak at the Hardwick Historical Society…we live next door to Hardwick, go to the Farmer’s Market on Sundays during the summer and Fall, our two oldest have their own farms in Hardwick…it’s all good. Hardwick is the quintessential New England town, complete with white-painted house-lined village. But, what to talk about. The very gracious woman who spoke with me suggested talking about CSA, but I can’t pass on an opportunity to talk about the local landscape -after all, that is my passion. If I could have majored in historic landscapes and moved into 19th century Sudbury – It would have been perfect!

 Anyway, I decided to drag out the photos of farms in the area that are actually still farms because they are selling at markets or CSA. I sent out an email to some of the area farms that do CSA or markets and heard from 1/3 of them – well, it could be worse. I plan on traveling around town to take pictures of these farms and the area landscape that has remained perfect because the farm remains viable. I remain committed, I NEED to implore folks to support their area farms in whatever ways they can if they want their landscape to remain the open and farmed.

Seriously, in our area, you drive by countless farms selling eggs in coolers by the road – why buy them at the supermarket? Is it more convenient to look at extra houses? Does anyone think the eggs at WF are better for them than what is growing down the street? AND do folks actually realize the connection between their purchase and their environment? We have a collection box at the local supermarket for the local dairy farms. It does not say what farms are local or who will benefit – but we are supposed to drop a dollar in to help out. Yes, I would, if there was a list of farms listed, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the list does not include some of my friends who are dairy farmers in the same town. I have chosen to buy milk directly from a farmer in the neighboring town. To me, that is the best way to ensure the quality of the product I want for my family, but also the best way to support maintaining the landscape around me. Why do people wring their hands over open space and farm land and then go buy their mesclun from a chain? What’s the point of whining about certain ginormous superstores putting small business out, if you never ever stopped in to buy your plants, shoes, coffee, ………. so, my talk will be about supporting your local farm, if you want to see the landscape you love.

Stillman's Farm® is a family owned farm in Massachusetts. We currently operate at two locations: a greenhouse/retail business in Lunenburg, and the majority of vegetable production in New Braintree. Glenn Stillman started the business in Lunenburg over 20 years ago and now enjoys the promise of the next generation further expanding the very diverse enterprise. For a few crops this simply is not feasible. For these particular crops, we participate in the State Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. This entails systematic scouting of fields, protection of beneficial insects, bio-controls, and well-timed applications of only the safest pesticides. With growing concern about genetically modified organisms (GMO), as a patron you can be confident that none of the produce we grow have been engineered, in fact, we often experiment with many heirloom varieties! Conscientiously Grown® The combination of no pesticides, good cultivation management, and IPM practices allows us to offer the widest possible selection of fruit and vegetable varieties and be a thriving sustainable farm. We have developed our own label, "conscientiously grown" to convey our commitment to the safety of our environment, family and customers. All of our hormone free, pasture raised meats carry a conscientiously grown label too!
