Thanksgiving 2013

I love Thanksgiving!

The last Christmas Dinner we had with Larry :)

The last Christmas Dinner we had with Larry 🙂

It is a wonderful Holiday to gather together with family, friends, whoever you feel like sitting down to dinner with. Originally, I think of people, from various cultures, finding common ground from which they may have a common bond and enjoy gaming and feasting with one another. We celebrate surviving another growing season as well as feeding so many households and families. And yes, it is wonderful to sit down with our own family and relish what we have accomplished this year. We have suffered through a great deal this year – namely Glenn’s stroke and the sudden passing of my Step-Father Larry. For Glenn I am truly thankful that he remains with us to run the farm and lead us. It was always clear to me, and now to him, that this farm cannot run without him, and I cannot function without him. Though our young children remained stoic through it all, I know they are not ready to be without the man who guides, supports, coaches, disciplines and loves them so passionately in their lives.
I cannot find anything to be grateful for with respect to Larry passing, except, I think he would have wanted to go quickly, and yet there is little solace in that. I am thankful that we have my Mother (Zsa Zsa) with us; she is safe and loved, and I know my children are happy to have her so close. We do have some really wonderful news to celebrate and I hope to be able to share it with you later.

Today we baked and sliced and shredded and arranged. Tomorrow we will celebrate harvest and family and what we are thankful for at Curtis’ home. It is super special that it will be with food mostly harvested from our farms. It is a long season when you farm for a living and nothing is better that sitting down to the bounty with other people who truly appreciate and respect each other. When you really depend on one another, you really have to pull it together and behave (it shouldn’t even be that difficult), you know, kinda like the Pilgrims and Natives. Yes, their ways were different, and it can be humbling to give any credit to any one else. I’d like to imagine that the Pilgrims were actually REALLY grateful for the help from the Natives, without whom they would have perished. In this life, may we all be able to  take a step back and recognize who has helped us along the way – and perhaps been our salvation. It’s not that hard…just start with “Thank You”.

From the Stillmans to our all our customers and supporters,

Thank You!

About stillmansfarm

Stillman's Farm® is a family owned farm in Massachusetts. We currently operate at two locations: a greenhouse/retail business in Lunenburg, and the majority of vegetable production in New Braintree. Glenn Stillman started the business in Lunenburg over 20 years ago and now enjoys the promise of the next generation further expanding the very diverse enterprise. The farm also has several Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs established in Boston, Lunenburg, Jamaica Plain, Brookline, New Braintree and the Southborough/Framingham area. In addition, the Stillman's trucks have become a fixture at the Boston Area Farmer's Markets. Our Philosophy Most of Stillman's produce is grown without chemicals. For a few crops this simply is not feasible. For these particular crops, we participate in the State Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. This entails systematic scouting of fields, protection of beneficial insects, bio-controls, and well-timed applications of only the safest pesticides. With growing concern about genetically modified organisms (GMO), as a patron you can be confident that none of the produce we grow have been engineered, in fact, we often experiment with many heirloom varieties! Conscientiously Grown® The combination of no pesticides, good cultivation management, and IPM practices allows us to offer the widest possible selection of fruit and vegetable varieties and be a thriving sustainable farm. We have developed our own label, "conscientiously grown" to convey our commitment to the safety of our environment, family and customers. All of our hormone free, pasture raised meats carry a conscientiously grown label too!
